Transition Planning

Making the transition from a school-based to an adult Special Olympics Iowa team.

About Transition

It is very important that as a parent/guardian that both you and your child participate in transition planning, as it addresses the desires, goals and vision of the student’s life once they leave public education in how they would like to live, work and socialize.  Special Olympics will be part of the students social life along with their Health and continued Community engagement.

Making the Transition

Transitioning to adulthood does not have to be a difficult experience. By developing a step-by-step plan to reach a post-school goal, every athlete can be successful.

Special Olympics College Programming

Special Olympics College programming falls under the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® (UCS) umbrella. Programming opportunities at the college/university level might look like:

  • Unified intramurals
  • Unified Sports Days
  • Special Olympics College Clubs
  • Hosting Area Competitions

Click here for more information on Special Olympics College programming and a current list of post-secondary institutions in Iowa with Unified programs. Don’t see your college/university listed? Reach out to Krista Smith, ksmith@soiowa.org, for information on how to get involved.

Join an Existing Adult Delegation

If post-secondary education is not the next phase, your athlete can continue participation in Special Olympics Iowa programs by joining an existing delegation.
Contact an SOIA area representative for a list of adult delegations in your area.

Special Olympics Outside of Iowa

All 50 United States have Special Olympics programs. If the next phase of your life takes you out of Iowa, we can put you in contact with the program in your new state to ensure a seamless transition and continued participation in Special Olympics.
